Although adult teeth are meant to last a lifetime, some times a tooth has to be removed for your health and safety. The more common reasons for tooth extraction are if the tooth is badly damaged, more often from trauma or decay.
Other times it may be from a crowded mouth where the dentist has to remove one tooth to help align your teeth, or if it hasn't come out of the gums yet and there is no room for it, the dentist may recommend removing it for your comfort.
Other reasons for tooth extraction include infection and risk of infection. Infection refers to when the tooth is infected all the way to the pulp, and may often require Root Canal Therapy for resolution. Risk of infection is referring to people whom have compromised or weakened immune systems. The infected tooth may become the way bacteria enter your bloodstream and can have serious ramifications for those with weakened immune systems.
